Rodri apologizes to Valencia over ‘weak’ comments, Courtois signs Madrid extension

Barcelona midfielder Rodri has apologized to Valencia after television footage appeared to show him describing the struggling La Liga side as “very weak” during their 5-0 defeat by Barcelona on Sunday.

The 30-year-old reportedly made the remarks to Barcelona teammates Pau Cubarsi and Raphinha while sitting on the bench after being substituted at Mestalla. 

Although the footage had no audio, Spanish broadcaster Movistar claimed to have lip-read Rodri saying Valencia had been unable to get beyond the halfway line.

The comments sparked criticism from Valencia supporters and sections of the Spanish media, who accused the midfielder of showing disrespect towards a club struggling at the bottom of the table. 

Valencia have failed to win any of their opening four league matches this season.

Rodri, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City in a £65m transfer this summer and won the Golden Ball after helping Spain win the 2026 World Cup, said he had already apologized to Valencia captain and Spain teammate Jose Gaya, as well as the rest of the squad.

The midfielder insisted his comments were an expression of surprise rather than an attempt to mock Valencia. 

He said he had no intention of taking advantage of the club’s difficult situation and stressed that he wants to see the former Spanish giants return to their previous level.

Rodri also described the remarks as part of a private conversation that had been taken out of context. 

He reiterated his apology to Valencia after Barcelona followed their league victory with a 5-1 Champions League win over Feyenoord on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to offer Thibaut Courtois a new contract following his outstanding display in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan. 

The Belgian goalkeeper made several crucial saves to help secure the win, reinforcing his importance to the Spanish giants. 

According to reports, Madrid are keen to begin negotiations quickly, with the club looking to extend the 34-year-old’s stay at the Santiago Bernabéu. 

The proposed renewal could allow Courtois to reach a landmark 10th season with the club, where he has remained one of their most dependable players.

Madrid are reportedly considering an initial one-year extension, although Courtois could push for a longer deal. 

The goalkeeper’s continued top-level performances have strengthened his negotiating position, while his decision to step away from Belgium duty temporarily could allow him to focus fully on his club career.
