Manchester City midfielder Rodri has returned to first-team training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury. The Spanish international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September 2024, which initially led to fears that his season was over. However, hopes have been reignited following his reappearance in training this week.
Despite the positive development, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has cautioned against rushing Rodri’s return to competitive action. Speaking to the press, Guardiola emphasized that the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner will only resume playing when the club’s medical staff gives the green light.
Rodri’s injury has been a significant blow to City’s campaign, with the midfielder widely regarded as one of the team’s most influential players. Guardiola noted that ACL injuries typically require between seven to eleven months for full recovery. He explained that although Rodri is gradually increasing his workload in training and improving every day, the risk of a setback remains high.
City’s performance this season has suffered notably in Rodri’s absence. The club currently sits fourth in the Premier League, a considerable dip by their usual standards. The Spaniard’s injury may partly explain the dip in form, with many observers believing his presence in midfield is key to the team’s success. Guardiola acknowledged the temptation to bring him back early but reiterated the need to prioritize long-term health.
Manchester City are still in contention for silverware this season, including a crucial push for FA Cup glory and a top-four league finish to secure Champions League qualification. These high-stakes goals could increase pressure to reintroduce Rodri, but Guardiola maintained that medical advice will guide every decision. “When the doctor says Rodri is stable and can start to play, after that, he is going to come back,” he concluded.
City’s next test comes this Saturday when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.
