Cristiano Ronaldo scored two first-half goals as Portugal beat Switzerland 4-0 in a UEFA Nations League match on Sunday.
Both sides met in Lisbon after their respective opening games of the UEFA Nations League during the week, which gave mixed results. Switzerland faced the Czech Republic but was beaten 2-1 by the Czech, while Portugal scored late in a 1-1 draw against Spain in Seville.
On Sunday evening, Switzerland thought they were on for a surprise result when they took the lead early in the game through Haris Seferovic, whose header in the 6th minute was chopped off by the VAR for handball.
Moments later, Portugal scored the opener as Real Betis defender William Carvalho tapped in a rebound from Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick, which was pushed into a spot by Switzerland’s goalkeeper.
Ronaldo quickly made it 2-0 with a simple finish after being set up by Diogo Jota in the 35th minute. This second of the game and Portugal’s third came six minutes before the break as Ronaldo tapped into the net from close range again.
Portugal was totally on top of the game and dominated well into the second half when they scored a fourth through Joao Cancelo, who beat the Swiss goalkeeper to a loose ball on the edge of the box, nitpicking the goalkeeper before slotting him from a long distance.
The win puts Portugal at the top of the table with four points ahead of the Czech Republic, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Spain.
The Czech also have four points, two ahead of Spain in that position, while Switzerland is bottom of the table.
Portugal will welcome the Czech Republic to Lisbon on Friday while Switzerland faces Spain.
In selected UEFA Nations results from Sunday, Spain played a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic while Norway beat Sweden 2-1 with Erling Holland scoring twice.
