Barcelona and Spanish midfielder Sergi Roberto has stated that he is ready to sign a new contract at Camp Nou despite the nature of the kind of salary he is earning at the club presently.
The midfielder signed a one-year contract extension last season but had to take a big pay cut to be able to sign the contract. The contract terminates at the end of the current season next summer. Roberto wants to sign a long-term deal this time to stay at the club.
The pay cut was brought into his contract due to the financial situation that Barcelona are facing. The player, who has been at Barcelona since his teenage years, bemoaned the low rate of salary he is earning but still wants to continue at Barcelona.
“Right now, I’m getting paid as if I had moved up from Barca B, but I do it with pride because I want to be here. For me, the economic issue is not important. We haven’t started talking [about a new contract] yet, but my idea is to stay. From what the coaching staff has told me, they are very happy with me and want me to stay. I would be very excited to be able to continue, to be able to enjoy myself on the pitch with the Barca shirt.” Roberto said.
Despite the situation, the player confirmed that contract negotiations had not started yet, even though the coaches were happy with his performances and want him to stay.
Sergi Roberto has played nine La Liga matches and has also scored two goals in those matches. The 30-year-old has also played three games in the UEFA Champions League for Xavi’s side.
Barcelona will return to La Liga action on Saturday, December 31st, against Espanyol.
