Tired of this scrutiny on captaincy, says former Tottenham star Paul Robinson as he backs Harry Maguire to get better under Erik ten Hag

Manchester United are going through the winds of change under new manager Erik ten Hag. While the Dutchman is trying his best to bring in players in areas they need to work on during the summer transfer window. However another concern surrounding the club has been the change of captaincy. Many people believe that England defender Harry Maguire will not continue as captain for the Red Devils as rumours suggest that Ten Hag may hand captaincy to talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to tie him down at Old Trafford.

Maguire got his captaincy back in 2020 as he succeeded Ashley Young during the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era. However his performances have bene major talking point especially after he became captain. He has been massively error prone and has only managed to keep seven clean sheets in 37 appearances last season across all competitions.

However former Tottenham goalkeeper and football pundit, Paul Robinson has shown his support to England international Harry Maguire. He recently voiced his opinion on Football Insider as he said, “Maguire’s form was indifferent last season. His struggles at both club and international level have been well documented. I was surprised that he was linked with Barcelona. If you look at previous seasons and his performances in the Euros, it makes more sense. Maguire has had a poor 12 months though.”

Robinson wants the manager and the fans to be more patient as he believes that Maguire from the Euros will return soon for club and country. He also shares how he has grown tired of this constant scrutiny of who is given the armband to lead the team. He believes that Maguire is a leader and he is not going to change that trait even without the armband.

“He has an opportunity under a new manager now, though. I am fed up of the scrutiny of his captaincy. It doesn’t matter who wears the armband. It should be irrelevant. Maguire is a leader. There is no value in taking the captaincy off of him.”

Robinson is absolutely bang on with his take on Maguire being a leader as we have seen that since his days at Leicester City and also in Old Trafford during his early days. He was really good for the England national team aswell for a couple of years. So giving the Englishman another chance does not harm anyone and Robinson is certain that if given another chance Maguire will return to his best form.
