Tottenham Turn to De Zerbi in High-Stakes Relegation Battle

Tottenham Hotspur have made a bold and urgent move by appointing Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year contract, placing the Italian at the center of one of the club’s most dramatic seasons in recent memory.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion manager steps in with just seven matches remaining, tasked with steering Spurs away from relegation danger. Currently sitting 17th in the Premier League, the club is only one point above the drop zone and has yet to register a win in 2026.

Despite the precarious situation, De Zerbi has committed his future to the club without a relegation escape clause, meaning he will remain in charge even if Spurs fall into the Championship. The decision underlines both the club’s faith in his long-term vision and the magnitude of the challenge ahead.

The appointment follows the departure of Igor Tudor, who left by mutual consent after a brief spell in charge. De Zerbi had long been identified as the club’s top target, praised for his attacking philosophy and tactical intelligence.

Sporting director Johan Lange emphasized this belief, stating: “Roberto was our number one target for the summer and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now. He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football.”

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson noted the Italian’s strong personality: “He’s quite a character… a very outspoken manager.”
