Wolves shock Manchester United with 2-0 win at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers made it two wins from two under new manager Vítor Pereira, defeating 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at Molineux. The victory ended a four-match losing streak against the Red Devils at home and lifted Wolves out of the relegation zone.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. Efforts from range by Diogo Dalot and Gonçalo Guedes failed to trouble the opposition’s goalkeeper, while Jørgen Strand Larsen and Lisandro Martínez both threatened with well-directed headers. Matheus Cunha’s impressive footwork was a highlight of the half, but neither team could find the breakthrough.

The game’s dynamics changed significantly two minutes into the second half when Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a late challenge on Nélson Semedo. Wolves took advantage of their numerical superiority, and although Larsen’s header was disallowed for offside, they soon took the lead. Cunha’s inswinging corner evaded everyone, including United goalkeeper André Onana, to give Wolves a bizarre but welcome goal.

Manchester United’s depleted squad struggled to mount a comeback, with substitutes Casemiro, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho all having half-chances but failing to capitalize. Wolves sealed the win with a late breakaway goal from Hwang Hee-chan, condemning United to their third successive defeat across all competitions.

The victory marked a significant milestone for Wolves, who secured back-to-back league clean sheets for the first time since January. Pereira became the first Wolves manager to win his first two games in charge, and the team’s second home win in the Premier League this season lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Manchester United, on the other hand, find themselves in 14th place, closer to the relegation zone than the top four in terms of points. The defeat highlights the team’s ongoing struggles, and manager Erik ten Hag will need to find a solution to their lack of creativity and consistency if they are to turn their season around.
