World Cup winner makes case for Argentina star

Spain midfielder Gavi has come to the defence of Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, insisting the midfielder should not face suspension following the heated confrontation that erupted after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. 

The incident occurred moments after Spain secured a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, sparking a mass altercation involving players and coaching staff from both sides.

Paredes, along with Argentina teammates Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, appeared to be involved in the post-match fracas as Spanish players celebrated their World Cup triumph. 

During the confrontation, Paredes was seen pushing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat, while Gavi was knocked to the ground after attempting to intervene.

The Barcelona midfielder was also pushed in the face by Paredes during the incident. 

FIFA has since appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the events, with the possibility of sanctions against players or coaching staff involved. 

The Argentine Football Association could also face disciplinary measures if found responsible for misconduct.l

Despite the ongoing investigation, Gavi believes the matter should not result in a suspension for Paredes. 

The midfielder acknowledged that the scenes were not ideal but described them as part of the emotional nature of football. 

He argued that if any punishment was warranted, it should have been dealt with by the referee during the match itself.

Meanwhile, Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has accepted responsibility for his actions after appearing to make contact with Spain’s Dani Olmo during the altercation. 

Ayala insisted he entered the situation only to prevent tensions from escalating and stated that he would apologize to Olmo, describing the incident as a push rather than a punch.

Confusion also surrounded reports that Paredes had been sent off after the final whistle. 

FIFA has clarified that no disciplinary action was taken against the midfielder during the match, despite an initial error on its commentator information system. 

The only confirmed dismissal in the final was Argentina’s Enzo Fernández, who received a second yellow card during stoppage time. 

FIFA’s investigation into the post-match disturbances remains ongoing, with further decisions expected in the coming days.
