Phil Foden signs contract extension with Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, ending speculation over his future. 

The England international’s previous deal was due to expire next summer. Still, he has committed his long-term future to the Premier League club as they begin a new era under head coach Enzo Maresca.

The 26-year-old, who made his senior debut for City as a 17-year-old under former manager Pep Guardiola, has established himself as one of the club’s most successful academy graduates. 

During his time with the first team, Foden has made 369 appearances, winning six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and two FA Cups.

Reacting to the contract extension, Foden described the decision as an easy one, saying representing Manchester City is everything to him. 

He also expressed his excitement about working with Maresca again, having previously played under the Italian during City’s historic Treble-winning campaign in the 2022-23 season, where Maresca served as Guardiola’s assistant.

Despite his success at club level, Foden endured a difficult 2025-26 campaign. He was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the FIFA World Cup after an inconsistent season in which he started only 23 Premier League matches. 

He finished the league campaign with seven goals and five assists in 33 appearances, having seen his role evolve into a deeper midfield position.

Foden’s attacking numbers have declined over the past two seasons following a career-best campaign in which he scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists after City’s Treble triumph. 

With wingers Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo providing width and Rayan Cherki frequently occupying the creative midfield role, Foden was often deployed further from goal, reducing his influence in the final third.

Manchester City will hope the contract extension marks the beginning of another successful chapter for one of the club’s most decorated players. 

Under Maresca’s leadership, Foden will be expected to rediscover his best form and play a central role as City aim to compete for major domestic and European honours in the coming seasons.
