Yamal discusses Ballon d’Or prospect

Lamine Yamal has played down talk of a future Ballon d’Or triumph after finishing second in the 2025 voting, insisting that individual awards are not a priority for him.

The Barcelona and Spain teenager says his focus remains firmly on enjoying his football and helping his teams win collective honours in 2026.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise since making his senior debut at just 15, emerging from Barcelona’s La Masia academy to become a global star.

Along the way, Yamal has drawn inevitable comparisons to Lionel Messi while already collecting major trophies with club and country, including La Liga and the European Championship, as well as individual awards such as the Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy.

Despite growing expectations that he will one day win the Ballon d’Or, Yamal says such recognition is beyond his control.

He stressed that the Golden Ball depends on multiple factors, including team success and voting, adding that he prefers to concentrate on playing well and winning trophies with Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Yamal also addressed scrutiny around his goal numbers, having scored 18 times last season and already netted 14 goals this campaign.

He acknowledged the debate over his end product but reiterated that his primary aim is overall performance and team success rather than personal statistics.

Barcelona will again rely heavily on Yamal as they chase more silverware, having already secured the Spanish Super Cup this season.

With the club locked in a tight La Liga title race and through to the Champions League knockout stages, Yamal said the decisive moments are approaching and that he is eager to contribute as the stakes rise.

Looking further ahead, Yamal reaffirmed his desire to spend his entire career at Barcelona after signing a long-term contract and inheriting the club’s iconic No.10 shirt.

The youngster has repeatedly stated his ambition to become a club legend, while also preparing for further challenges with Spain as they aim for World Cup success.
