Jon Rahm is set to leave LIV Golf after rejecting the proposed conditions for the league’s next phase. His lawyer revealed this on Wednesday while telling a US bankruptcy court that the terms were unacceptable to the two-time major champion.
Rahm’s lawyer, John Beck, said his client had reviewed the proposals for “LIV 2.0” before deciding not to continue with the circuit.
“Mr Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0, as the parties have been referring to it, and has determined that those terms are unacceptable to him, and he will not be participating going forward in LIV 2.0,” Beck told the court.
Rahm joined LIV Golf before the 2024 season after signing a contract reportedly worth around $450 million.
He became one of the league’s leading figures and captained Legion XIII, guiding the team to success during its first campaign.
His planned departure arrives at a difficult moment for the league. The Saudi-backed circuit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 8 as it attempts to restructure its business and establish a new model for the future.
Rahm’s exit removes one of its most recognizable players as the organization seeks financial stability and fresh backing.
Beck said Rahm and LIV were involved in advanced discussions over a separation agreement. The two sides are expected to complete that process by October 15, with the agreement potentially returning to court for consideration at a hearing scheduled for November 5.
The financial details of Rahm’s departure remain unclear. Reports say the Spaniard is still owed more than $100 million in future payments under his existing agreement. At the same time, other accounts put the remaining value of his contract at a much higher figure.
The final settlement could determine how quickly the split is completed.
The decision also creates uncertainty for LIV’s planned relaunch. Rahm was recruited as a major star who could draw attention to the league, and his absence leaves the organization without one of its most successful and marketable players.
