Tiger Woods withdraws from Genesis Invitational

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the 2025 Genesis Invitational, citing that he is “still processing” the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who passed away on February 4. The 15-time major champion announced he is “not ready” to return to the sport.

Woods made the announcement a few days after having committed to playing at Torrey Pines. In a social media post, Woods stated, “I intended to compete this week, but I’m just not prepared”. He added, “I did everything I could to get ready, knowing it’s what my mom would have wished, but I’m still coming to terms with her absence.”

He also expressed gratitude to those who have reached out, stating, “I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the ongoing support since my mom’s passing.”

Woods was supposed to be the host of the event, but Jake Knapp took his spot.

The Genesis Invitational was scheduled to be held at the Riviera Country Club but was moved to Torrey Pines in San Diego due to wildfires in Los Angeles.

Woods’ mother, Tida, had a massive influence on his upbringing and golf career. Woods wrote, “My Mom was a force of nature all her own; her spirit was simply undeniable.” He added, “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter; without her, none of my personal achievements would have been possible”.

This was to be Woods’ first official PGA Tour start since the 2024 Open Championship. Following back surgery in September, he skipped the Hero World Challenge but did compete alongside his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship in December, as well as in two TGL events.

Since his serious car accident in February 2021, Woods has had a limited playing schedule, and even though he may have recovered, he has not quite returned to form.
