Jaeger holds off Scheffler to win first PGA title

Stephan Jaeger clinched his maiden PGA Tour title in a dramatic fashion, outlasting a competitive field to claim victory at the Texas Children’s Houston Open with a final round of 12 under par. Despite fierce competition from world number one Scottie Scheffler, who was enjoying a two-win streak before the event, and defending champion Tony Finau, Jaeger remained composed to secure the win after finishing with a one-shot lead.

Entering the final round tied for the lead, Jaeger remained composed and undeterred, carding a solid 67 in a round that included just one bogey with four birdies. Even though he faced some pressure on the back nine, Jaeger maintained his focus and scaled through the challenging course with precision. The game would have gone another way if Scheffler had not missed a six-feet shot, which eventually gave victory to Jaeger.

Reflecting on his performance, Jaeger said: “I just tried to stay within myself, tried to make some birdies. Birdies eluded me on the back nine, but this golf course plays a little difficult, especially if you’re right around the lead. There’s so much trouble, and I’m super happy obviously with the day.”

He also had some praises for Scheffler, who he had shared the course with on a few occasions in the past, describing him as a “great dude.”

Scheffler, while disappointed with his missed opportunity, credited Jaeger for his trophy-winning performance and deserving victory. Although he experienced some challenges and misreads on the greens, Scheffler remained resilient and put up a commendable fight until the end and finished at second place, which was not all too bad.

Thomas Detry, another contender in the mix who was also tied for second place, expressed his frustration at missed opportunities but acknowledged his solid play throughout the tournament. Regardless of some setbacks, Detry remained composed and had a few good things to say about how the match turned out.
