Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed the new captain of Pakistan’s men’s ODI cricket team.
The PCB officially announced the decision on Monday, stating that Afridi will begin his tenure leading the team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa.
This appointment follows the dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan from the captaincy role for unknown reasons.
Afridi, a left-arm fast bowler, has evolved into a key figure in Pakistan cricket since making his international debut in 2018. At just 25 years old, he has garnered such sterling achievements, including being named ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2021.
Part of what makes him stand out includes his showing up to take important wickets and ability swing the ball both ways.
Under Afridi’s leadership, the Pakistan Super League’s Lahore Qalandars have secured multiple titles, notably achieving three championships by 2025.
His captaincy skills have been praised for guiding the team tactically and extracting the best performances from squad members.
This success at franchise level adds to the optimism surrounding his appointment as ODI captain.
The removal of Mohammad Rizwan came after underwhelming team performances, including Pakistan’s failure to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy and a recent series loss against the West Indies.
Rizwan’s last significant outing included being dismissed for a golden duck in the third ODI against the West Indies, which was a disappointing moment during his captaincy.
PCB’s decision is a sign of a shift in the direction of rejuvenating the national side with younger leadership. Afridi’s dynamic playing style, combined with his growing experience in international cricket, is expected to bring fresh energy and strategic clarity to the Pakistan ODI team.
Afridi’s immediate challenge will be to lead Pakistan in the ongoing series against South Africa.
As one of the youngest captains at this level, Afridi has the opportunity to shape the team with his vision, aiming to restore Pakistan’s standing in international cricket.
