Cricket tournament, Afro-Asia Cup set to return

The Afro-Asia Cup, a cricket tournament featuring teams from Asia and Africa, is poised for revival after a 17-year hiatus. The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) announced plans during its recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) to collaborate with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to bring back this exciting series, which last took place in 2007.

Historically, the Afro-Asia Cup has only been held twice: in 2005 in South Africa and 2007 in India. The inaugural series ended in a draw, while Asia XI dominated the second edition, winning all three matches. Notable players like Inzamam-ul-Haq, MS Dhoni, and Virender Sehwag participated, making it a memorable event for cricket fans.

Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the ACA’s interim chair, expressed enthusiasm for the tournament’s return, highlighting its potential financial benefits and the eagerness from both African and Asian cricket communities. He noted that the revival could create unique opportunities for players from traditionally rival nations like India and Pakistan to unite on the same team. This aspect is particularly significant given the current suspension of bilateral cricket between these two countries due to political tensions.

The ACA has also proposed launching an Africa Premier League, inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL), to further enhance competitive cricket in Africa. This initiative aims to attract sponsorships and provide a platform for local talent.

While discussions about the Afro-Asia Cup’s revival are still in early stages, the ACA is optimistic about moving forward. They plan to engage with ACC representatives soon to formalize arrangements for the tournament. If successful, this revival could reshape cricketing dynamics between Asia and Africa, fostering greater collaboration and exposure for players from both continents.

The Afro-Asia Cup’s potential comeback reflects a growing appetite for cross-continental cricketing events. With strong support from cricket boards and fans alike, this initiative could usher in a new era in international cricket, offering exciting fixtures and uniting players across borders.
