England and Australian Women to meet at the Ashes for the first time in 76 years

Australia’s prestigious Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is set to host a historic moment in women’s cricket as England prepares to face off against Australia in the first women’s Test at the venue since 1949. The upcoming Ashes tour in Australia will feature a four-day match starting on January 30, 2025.

Cricket Australia’s head of cricket operations and scheduling, Peter Roach, expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase women’s cricket on major stages like the MCG. “This match is not just about cricket; it’s about challenging ourselves to grow crowds and elevate the sport’s profile,” Roach stated.

The decision to hold the Test at the MCG comes amid ongoing discussions about the optimal format for women’s Test cricket. While last year’s Ashes Test in Nottingham ran for five days, Cricket Australia favors a four-day format with 100 overs per day.

The significance of the upcoming Test resonates with players, including Australia’s all-rounder Ellyse Perry. “Playing at the MCG on such a big occasion as an Ashes series is an amazing opportunity for the team,” Perry remarked. However, opinions vary regarding the duration of Test matches, with Perry highlighting the need for further assessment to determine the most effective format for women’s cricket.

The upcoming Test at the MCG revives memories of the 1949 encounter between England and Australia, which was part of a three-match series that ended in a draw. This historic event marks the 90th anniversary of the inaugural women’s Test match and the first day/night Test held at the venue.

Australia, the reigning Women’s Ashes holders, are eager to defend their title against England in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. With both teams preparing to seek greatness under the lights at the MCG, fans can expect to be treated to one of the most important moments in women’s cricket in recent years.
