Hosts India triumphed over New Zealand to secure a spot in the World Cup final. The match featured several remarkable moments, with Virat Kohli’s splendid century stealing the show. Kohli’s innings of 117 runs not only played a pivotal role in India amassing a formidable total of 397-4 but also marked his record-breaking 50th century in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The iconic batsman surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s century tally, which added another record to his growing list.
India’s innings was marked by standout performances, with Shreyas Iyer contributing the fastest century of the game – a blistering 70-ball 105, embellished with eight sixes. The dazzling partnership between Kohli and Iyer laid the foundation for an imposing total.
However, New Zealand, known for their resilience, responded with a spirited effort in their chase. Daryl Mitchell emerged as the hero for the Black Caps, crafting a sublime century. Mitchell’s innings, coupled with a substantial partnership of 181 runs alongside skipper Kane Williamson, posed a significant threat to India’s aspirations.
The 33rd over proved decisive, as Mohammed Shami, India’s pace spearhead, turned the tide in India’s favour. Dismissing Williamson for 69 and then sending Tom Latham back for a two-ball duck, Shami’s crucial breakthroughs relieved the mounting pressure. Despite Glenn Phillips’ valiant effort, contributing 41 runs, and Mitchell’s remarkable 134, both succumbed to Shami’s bowling.
Shami finished with figures of 7-57, etching his name in the record books with the best bowling figures for India in ODIs. New Zealand, despite their spirited fightback, ultimately fell short, bowled out for 327, leaving them 70 runs adrift of the target.
India’s peak form with both bat and ball secured their place in the World Cup final, setting the stage for a highly-anticipated final showdown, holding on Sunday, against the winner of Australia vs South Africa when the two meet this Thursday.
