India stuns Bangladesh in first Champions Trophy game

India commenced its ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a decisive six-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Thursday. This match, which took place in Dubai, marked the opening of Group A and brought out the best of both teams’ strengths in a high-stakes encounter.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first, but their decision quickly backfired as they faced a devastating bowling attack from India. Mohammed Shami was the standout performer, claiming five wickets for just 53 runs, which included a remarkable spell that saw Bangladesh slump to 35 for 5 within the first ten overs. Shami’s early breakthroughs set the tone for India’s onslaught, as he became the fastest bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets in terms of balls bowled during this match.

Despite the early collapse, Bangladesh managed to recover thanks to a resilient partnership between Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali. The duo combined for a crucial sixth-wicket stand of 154 runs, which significantly bolstered their total. Hridoy scored an impressive 100 runs off 118 balls, while Jaker contributed a solid 68 runs. Their efforts helped Bangladesh reach a total of 228 all out in 49.4 overs, providing India with a target that was achievable but not without its challenges.

In response, India faced some early hiccups in their chase. After a brisk start, they found themselves at 112 for 1 before losing three quick wickets for just 32 runs. Rohit Sharma (41) and Virat Kohli (22) were among those dismissed during this phase, raising concerns about India’s stability at the crease.

However, Shubman Gill emerged as the backbone of India’s innings, scoring an unbeaten century with a composed performance that saw him finish on 101 runs off 129 balls. His innings was marked by patience and precision, ensuring that India crossed the finish line comfortably with 21 balls to spare.

KL Rahul also played a vital role in supporting Gill, contributing an unbeaten 41 runs as they formed an unbroken partnership that secured India’s victory.

India, who are second in their group standings, will now prepare to face hosts Pakistan in their next game this Sunday, while, on Monday, Bangladesh will go up against New Zealand.
