England have turned to familiar leadership in an effort to begin a new era in Test cricket, with Joe Root returning as captain and Stephen Fleming appointed as the team’s new red-ball head coach.
The appointments follow the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket and bring major change to England’s Test setup ahead of a busy period that begins with a home series against Pakistan.
Root returns to the captaincy four years after stepping down from the role in 2022. During his previous spell in charge, he led England in 65 Tests, more than any other captain in the country’s history, and finished with the most victories by an England Test skipper.
He also established himself as England’s leading Test run-scorer and one of the most influential batters of his generation.
The 35-year-old recently captained England during the Test against New Zealand at The Oval and will now resume the position on a permanent basis.
His first assignment will be the three-Test series against Pakistan, which begins at Headingley on August 19.
Root returns with a unique perspective, having experienced different leadership styles during his career.
He captained England before the arrival of the aggressive approach that marked former coach Brendon McCullum’s tenure and later became a key figure in that setup as a senior player.
Alongside Root, England have secured one of the most respected coaching figures in world cricket.
Fleming arrives after a coaching career that includes extensive success with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and previous experience with New Zealand cricket.
The former New Zealand captain has built a reputation for creating stable, successful teams and managing high-pressure environments.
His work with Chennai Super Kings turned the franchise into one of the IPL’s most consistent performers, highlighted by multiple title-winning campaigns.
The England and Wales Cricket Board reportedly considered several candidates before selecting Fleming, with his experience and leadership record proving decisive.
However, he will not immediately take charge of the Test side. Long-serving assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will oversee the Pakistan series before Fleming officially begins his tenure ahead of England’s tour of South Africa later this year.
