South Africa secures final spot after defeating Pakistan

South Africa has made history by securing its first-ever spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, scheduled to hold next year. They qualified for the final following a dramatic two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion.

Chasing a target of 148 runs, South Africa faced a precarious situation, collapsing from 96 for 4 to 99 for 8. However, tail-enders Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen formed an unbroken partnership of 51 runs to guide their team to victory.

The journey to the final has been remarkable. South Africa began its WTC campaign with a drawn series against India, followed by a disappointing 0-2 defeat in New Zealand. However, they rebounded strongly, winning series against West Indies and Bangladesh before triumphing over Sri Lanka at home. This win against Pakistan not only confirmed their place in the final but also increased their points percentage to 66.67%, cementing their position at the top of the WTC standings.

South Africa began the fourth day hoping on a small miracle while being determined to take charge of the day. Aiden Markram’s dismissal early in the day was meant to rattle them, but they pressed on, eventually turning things around in their favor to give them victory.

Captain Temba Bavuma expressed immense pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “We have always found a way to ensure the result was on our side,” reflecting on their journey throughout the championship cycle. The victory marks a significant achievement for South African cricket and will, no doubt, motivate the team to do better in the future as they now know what’s within reach.

South Africa will be joined in Lord’s next year by the winner of the ongoing series between Australia and India. Whoever the winner gets to be,  South Africa will do a lot of work as they attempt their first shot at becoming Test champions.
