Wood ruled out of remainder of Ashes series

England’s bowling suffers a blow with Mark Wood sidelined for the rest of the 2025-26 Ashes series due to a left-knee injury.

The 35-year-old fast bowler sustained the issue during the first Test in Perth, where he delivered 11 overs before discomfort ended his involvement.

Australia claimed an eight-wicket victory in that match, then won the second Test at the Gabba by the same margin to lead 2-0.

Wood returned to Test cricket in Perth after knee surgery in February and seven months of rehabilitation. Swelling in his left knee forced him to skip practice and the Gabba Test.

Scans revealed the flare-up’s extent exceeded expectations, even after injections and medical care. He will fly home this week for an ECB-led recovery, focusing on the long term.

Surrey’s Matthew Fisher joins the squad as a replacement from the England Lions tour in Australia. Fisher, yet to play a Test, offers seam bowling options ahead of the third Test in Adelaide on December 17.

England’s management eyes his potential to support the attack through the series’ final matches in Melbourne and Sydney.

Wood shared his frustration on Instagram, posting images from Perth with a message about the setback. He noted arrival with hopes of contributing through the Tests, but the knee failed to respond to treatment.

The injury adds to Wood’s history of physical challenges, which have limited his international appearances. His express pace, often over 90 mph, and bounce generation has been a trouble for batters.

England now adjusts plans without his services, leaning on swing bowlers and spinners for the remaining three Tests. Captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum face the task of rallying the team from the 2-0 deficit.

Australia also deals with absences, as Josh Hazlewood misses the series with hamstring and Achilles problems. Their bowlers exploited conditions in the opening wins, setting a strong position. England seeks momentum in Adelaide, where day-night conditions will test both sides.
