Oscar Piastri wins at Zandvoort

Oscar Piastri claimed a dramatic victory at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, extending his lead in the drivers’ standings to 34 points after his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris was forced to retire late in the race due to an oil leak.

Max Verstappen finished second, while rookie Isack Hadjar made his first podium appearance, and the first for Racing Bulls, after coming in third.

From the start, Piastri controlled the race, taking pole position and maintaining his lead despite pressure from Verstappen and Norris.

Norris initially battled hard, even managing to overtake Verstappen early on, setting up what appeared to be a strong one-two finish for McLaren.

However, the race took an unfortunate turn when Norris, who was running in second place and closing in on Piastri, began experiencing smoke from his car with just eight laps remaining.

His oil leak forced him to slow and eventually retire on lap 65. This singular incident is a blow to his championship challenge as he now trails Piastri by a wider margin with only nine races left in the season.

Despite the trouble with his teammate, Piastri had a strong outing, earning the grand slam achievement for taking pole position, leading all laps in the race, winning fastest lap, and ultimately winning the race.

The race also included chaos for Ferrari drivers, with Lewis Hamilton crashing out on lap 23 and Charles Leclerc suffering a crash later that ended his race prematurely.

Hamilton was later handed a five-place grid penalty for failing to slow down under double yellow flags. This means he will begin his next race five places lower than his qualifying position.

Piastri’s win was his seventh of the season, equaling the career total of his manager and ex-F1 driver Mark Webber, and it positions him strongly for the championship as the series heads into the next rounds in Italy and beyond. McLaren has all but won the constructors’ title at this point, as they comfortably lead with over 300 points.
