Stipe Miocic Gets Sixth Title Fight Win; Daniel Cormier Retires

UFC heavyweight Stipe Miocic beat Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision to retain his title in the main event of UFC 252 on August 15.

Miocic now has six title fight wins, the most in heavyweight history. He faced Daniel Cormier for the third time. The fight was at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, with no fans in attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the fight, Cormier said that he was going to ride off into the sunset, win or lose. After it ended, DC announced that he was officially retiring.

“That’ll be it for me,” Cormier said. “I’m not interested in fighting for anything but titles, and I don’t imagine there’s going to be a title in the future.”

Cormier was at the top of the UFC light heavyweight division while Jon Jones was out of action, dealing with his issues outside the cage.

He was able to keep the light heavyweight division relevant before moving up to heavyweight. There, he claimed the title with a first round knockout against Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on July 7, 2018.

Daniel Cormier then defended the belt against Derrick Lewis, submitting him in the second round at UFC 230 on November 3, 2018.

Miocic, on the other hand, waited over a year for his rematch, growing frustrated and even claiming that Cormier was lucky in the clinch position at UFC 226. He also said that Cormier’s win was a fluke.

According to Miocic, holding the record for most successive title defenses in the heavyweight division made him deserving of an instant rematch with Daniel Cormier.

DC finally accepted the rematch and Miocic would make the most of it, becoming a two-time UFC heavyweight champion after a TKO win in the fourth round at UFC 241 on August 17, 2019.
