2024 US Open Update: Week 2

The 2024 US Open has reached an exciting juncture, with the semifinals set to feature some thrilling matchups following a series of very surprising results.

Defending champion Coco Gauff made headlines for all the wrong reasons, as she was eliminated in the fourth round by fellow American Emma Navarro. Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam title last year, struggled with her consistency, ultimately falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, ending any hopes of back-to-back title wins.

Navarro’s victory marked a significant milestone in her career, as she made it past the quarterfinals, where she beat Paula Badosa 6-2 7-5, and has now set up a semifinal meeting with Aryna Sabalenka.

On the men’s side, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz have both advanced to the semifinals, marking a historic moment as they become the first American men to reach this stage at the US Open since 2006. Tiafoe ended Gregor Dimitrov’s campaign, while Fritz overcame Casper Ruud in a hard-fought battle.

The tournament has seen the early exits of several top players, including Novak Djokovic, who was knocked out in the third round, and Carlos Alcaraz, who was also eliminated earlier than expected. This has opened the door for other contenders and some exciting fixtures, like Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev, who are set for a quarterfinal clash on Thursday.

Iga Swiatek is still in the tournament and has a Thursday match against Jessica Pegula to earn a ticket to the semifinals. The world no. 1 is seeking her second grand slam title of the year after winning the French Open back in June. The winner of the quarterfinal fixture will face Karolina Muchova in the semifinals.

With just a few days left to go, the 2024 US Open has been nothing short of exciting, with some unexpected results across the board. This shows how stiff the competition is getting, especially with the diminishing presence of the Big Four on the men’s side.
