Alcaraz defeats Paul to set up semifinal match with Medvedev

Carlos Alcaraz’s quest to win back-to-back titles at Wimbledon is still underway and he has now progressed to the semifinals after an emphatic win over Tommy Paul. Alcaraz started the quarterfinal round by dropping a set but quickly regained control to win 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2. The win has now secured him a semifinal match where he would face former world number one Daniil Medvedev.

The Spaniard started the first set on a good note but was quickly carried away and Paul took the lead, before eventually winning the set. Learning from his mistake from the first set, Alcaraz took charge of the second set and capitalised on his opponent’s errors to win the remaining three sets.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz noted what losing the first set meant to him and how he had to keep himself together for the rest of the game: “When I lost the first set it was difficult. But I knew it’s a really long journey so I had to stay there.”

Daniil Medvedev ended Jannik Sinner’s Wimbledon campaign with a five-set victory. The match, which lasted for four hours, saw Sinner almost retire due to a medical emergency. But the Italian stayed on, although he still lost 6-7 (9-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3.

The match was one of the most demanding of the tournament so far, and both players brought their best, as Medvedev even noted after he won: “I knew if I want to beat Jannik, it needed to be a tough match. I felt at one moment he was not feeling that good but I knew it could still get away. It was great points, great match, and I’m really happy.”

The match helped the Russian claim revenge for Sinner beating him at the final of the Australian Open this year. Medvedev’s route to his first Wimbledon final will include beating Alcaraz when they meet on Friday.
