Alexander Zverev braves persistent stomach problems to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis of the Cincinnati Masters

 

Alexander Zverev continues to be in fiery hot form as he staged one of his best comebacks against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis of the Cincinnati Masters. The German tennis star braved persistent stomach pain to stage one of his best comebacks against the Greek star.  He won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4).

He had a double break down in the deciding set and from there he showed great courage and determination to come back and win the match. He came back from 1-4 down to win that set in a tiebreak and eventually won the game and progressed to the finals.

“Yeah, I actually started feeling not that great in the middle of the second set already,” Zverev said when he was asked about his stomach problems. “I felt very low energy. My stomach was swirling a little bit.”

Tsitsipas was also seen taking a big toilet break after losing the first set. He was seen walking off the court with his phone while his father was also on the phone. It raised Zverev’s suspicion on the Greek star as he thought that his father might be sending him to match related information on his phone.

“Do something, go check, somebody escort him already, his dad is on the freaking phone, it’s the same thing in Paris, the same thing every other tournament,” Zverev appealed to the umpire.

When quizzed about the match and also this particular incident, Zverev made sure that there was no bad blood with Tsitsipas. He sadi, “Yeah, I mean, it was a very dramatic match against one of the best players in the world this year,” the German went on. “I think Stef has been playing incredible tennis and is on an incredible level. I feel like the match that we put on today, without a crowd, wouldn’t be the match, if you know what I mean. It would be completely different.”

The Olympic gold medallist then went on to highlight how the drama in this match made it really very entertaining for the fans. “I think it was very entertaining for all the people, but it was also entertaining to play it itself, because I went through a lot of emotions,” Zverev added. “I mean, first, I was winning, I was playing incredible tennis. Then I had some physical issues. Then I had to come back. I had to dig deep. To come back, to win that match, is a great feeling.”
