At the end, I was relieved – Roger Federer on his retirement decision

Roger Federer is one of the most decorated Tennis players of all time. Federer dominated the circuit for almost two decades and called time on his glorious career at the Laver Cup 2022 in September. The Swiss Maestro was surrounded by some of his biggest rivals as well as friends, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray to name a few in Team Europe.

Federer played for almost 25 years and tennis became a huge part of his life. However, the veteran admitted he was relieved after he called time on his career. Federer was visibly emotional in his farewell speech but he had the support of his friends and family when he played professional tennis for the one last time.

Federer told reporters in New York, “At the end I was relieved, I think, and happy to retire. It ended in the most perfect way at the Laver Cup. I was surrounded by my biggest rivals, and my family was there and my friends. For me it felt like, “OK, I’m good now. I don’t need to chase that itch any more.”

Meanwhile, Federer received a standing ovation when he was invited to sit in the Royal Box for Andy Murray’s match at this year’s Wimbledon.

“Last year, I walked out on Centre Court for the 100-year anniversary celebration. It was beautiful but painful,” claimed the former No.1. “I was injured. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play again, so it was a very emotional moment.

“But this year was totally different. My dad whispered to me, “Don’t you wish you were playing on court instead of sitting and watching?” and I was like, “No. I feel content watching and enjoying the game.”

Federer ended his career with 20 Grand Slam titles, the third most for any male player after Novak Djokovic (currently 23) and Rafael Nadal (currently 22 major titles).
