Djokovic, Gauff reach quarterfinal at Roland Garros

It’s been over a week of nonstop action at the French Open, with players bringing in nothing but their best in a bid to become this year’s champions.

Many have fallen along the way, some suffering upsets, while a few have now scaled to the quarterfinals, where they hope to keep their dream alive for at least one more day.

Carlos Alcaraz, the defending men’s champion, scored a four-set victory over American Ben Shelton, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The 22-year-old Spaniard notched his 100th career win on clay during the match, overcoming moments of frustration and self-doubt. Alcaraz will now prepare to face another American, Tommy Paul, in the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic continued his relentless pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title by cruising past Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. 

This victory on Monday not only marked Djokovic’s 100th win at Roland Garros but also propelled him into his record-breaking 19th French Open quarterfinal, surpassing  Roger Federer’s previous record for most quarterfinal appearances at a single Grand Slam. 

The 38-year-old Serbian, who has not dropped a set in the tournament so far, will next face third seed Alexander Zverev, reigniting a rivalry that saw Djokovic retire injured in their last Grand Slam meeting at the Australian Open earlier this year.

World number two, Coco Gauff, took charge of her fourth-round match against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, winning 6-0, 7-5. Gauff’s performance was quite fierce, especially in the opening set, which she completed in just 29 minutes, conceding only five points in the first five games. 

This marks Gauff’s fifth consecutive quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros, proof of her consistency and hard work to always stay in form. The 2022 runner-up is still seeking her first French Open singles title and will next face fellow American and Australian Open champion Madison Keys.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek survived a stern test from 12th seed Elena Rybakina, rallying from a set down to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. Swiatek’s victory extended her Roland Garros winning streak to 25 matches, tying Monica Seles for the second-longest streak in the Open Era.

Despite a shaky start, marked by 27 unforced errors in the first eight games, Swiatek had one of her best outings as she clawed back from the brink of defeat to secure the win in two hours and 30 minutes. She now faces 13th seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, as she continues her quest for a fifth French Open title.
