Djokovic will enter immortality if he achieves Calendar slam: Goran Ivanisevic

Novak Djokovic’s head coach Goran Ivanisevic feels the Serbian will enter immortality if he achieves Calendar slam. Djokovic has already won Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2021 and he is on the cusp of making history in the sport.

Only Don Budge and Rod Laver have won Calendar slam in Men’s Tennis and Djokovic is standing at the door of another big milestone in his glorious career.

In fact, Djokovic was looking all set for the Golden slam but his quest ended when he was beaten in the semifinal contest by Germany’s Alexander Zverev in three sets in Tokyo Olympics 2020. Furthermore, Djokovic also lost the Bronze medal match against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets.

However, there is no denying that Djokovic is playing at the top of his game and mostly brings his A-game to the table in the Grand slams. The World no.1 has also pulled out of the Cincinnati Open to be ready for the all-important US Open.

“I am part of a team that writes history,” Ivanisevic said in an interview with Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List. “If Djokovic wins the US Open this year and collects all four Grand Slams in the same year, he enters immortality, the rank of Rod Laver. “Although it is much harder to achieve such success in the 21st century than in Laver’s time.”

In fact, Rod Laver is the only Men’s Tennis player to achieve Calendar slam in Open Era. Meanwhile, Margaret Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988) have also secured the honour in the Open Era, with the latter being the only player to win a Golden slam.

Goran added that it hasn’t been an easy road for Djokovic and not many would have thought that he will be one slam away from achieving the historic feat.

“It was not easy for him (Djokovic),” Ivanisevic continued. “Five or six years ago no one could have imagined that Novak would be in a position to make this historic feat.”
