Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem has recently announced that he won’t be returning to action at the Cordoba Open 2022 as he faces yet another setback in his career. It is a huge blow for him, his fans and also to the tennis fraternity.
Thiem pulled up his tendons in his right wrist during the second round match at the 2021 Mallorca Championships. It was a preparatory tournament for last year’s Wimbledon Championships. He then announced that he would be out of action for the entirety of the 2021 calendar as he had to treat his wrist injury immediately.
Thiem’s long road to recovery almost looked over from his training videos and clippings. He was all set to return to action in the south American clay court swing but he recently upload a short video on Cordoba Open’s social media handle revealing that he has faced a minor setback in his career.
He highlighted how he had a strain on his ligaments and minor injury in between his knuckles. He also stated how he lacked practice ahead of the ATP 250 tournament.
However, he insisted that the situation with his wrist is in much better condition. “Hello everybody, very sorry I will have to pull out. In the last days I suffered minor injury between my knuckles, little strain of my ligaments,” Thiem said in the video. “The positive thing is that wrist is fine, but I’m suffering pain in my hand, and also lacking of practice…”
The 28-year-old shared his disappointment in withdrawing from the Cordoba Open but he promised to be back for the future events.”I have to pull out, very sad. I’m gonna come back when I’m 100% fit. Thank you so much for the warm welcome in Cordoba.”
Thiem is also scheduled to feature in the Argentina Open followed by the Rio Open which are supposed to take place later this month. Therefore he will have a shot at those events but will only participate after evaluating the situation.
He has not played for more than six months so he would have to give himself proper time to be ready for the Roland Garros. Clay is Thiem’s biggest strength and he will be looking to make the return to Grand Slam by participating at the Roland Garros this season.
