Professional Tennis On Further Hold

 

As some major sports around the world plan to get back after being on hold as a result of the pandemic, it seems tennis does not want to rush things. This is as the ATP and WTA have announced that they would be extending their suspension till the end of July.

Professional tennis has been on hold since March and resumption has continued to be shifted as a result of the pandemic.

The lockdown in different countries has also affected the chances of resumption of the games. The ATP and WTA had earlier announced that tennis would be resuming in mid-July. But this latest development means that tennis could officially resume on August 1st.

Already, we have seen the rescheduling of some iconic events like the French Open and the outright cancellation of some others. This extension means that events that were supposed to hold in Hamburg, Bastad, Umag, and Atlanta for the men and Lausanne and Bucharest for the women would no longer hold.

Andrea Gaudenzi, chairman of the ATP, expressed his disappointment at the decision of the body to follow through with the extension.

The WTA also expressed their regret at the extension but made it clear that they would continue to pay attention to medical and professional input as regards the pandemic, while keeping an eye on things as they unfold. For now, all seems set for the French Open and the US Open to go as planned although both events could take place indoors.

Djokovic Hopes To Beat Record

World number one, Novak Djokovic, has said that he plans to become the player with the most grandslams as well as the man with the longest-reigning number one champ. Both records are, at the moment, held by Roger Federer who has a total of 20 Grand Slams and has spent 310 weeks at the number one spot while Djokovic has 17 Grand Slams and has spent 282 weeks as number one.

No doubt, Djokovic looks to be gaining very fast and he still has age on his side. He was the winner of the Australian Open and January and won the Dubai Tennis Championship for a massive 5th time.

According to him, “I don’t believe in limits. I think limits are only illusions of your ego or your mind.” He seems to be in a very good point in his career, with a few good years to play. So there is every chance to believe that be can retire as the player with the most Grand Slam titles and with the most stay as number one.
