Roger Federer withdraws from Tokyo Olympics due to knee injury setback

Former World No.1 Roger Federer has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Tokyo Olympics due to a knee injury setback. Federer revealed that he suffered the injury while playing during the grass court season. The Swiss Maestro had withdrawn from French Open 2021 in the fourth round match against Matteo Berrettini in order to be ready for the grass court season.

Federer then lost in the second round of Halle Open against Canada’s youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, Federer was able to bounce back strongly in the Wimbledon.

Federer stated that he is greatly disappointed at missing the Olympics and it has been his honor to represent Switzerland in the prestigious games.

“During the grass court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games,” Federer announced on social media.

“I am greatly disappointed, as it has been an honor and highlight of my career each time I have represented Switzerland. I have already begun rehabilitation in the hopes of returning to the Tour later this summer. I wish the entire Swiss team the best of luck and I will be rooting hard from afar.

The legendary player made it to the quarter final of Wimbledon but his journey was ended by Polish player Hubert Hurkacz. Federer had earlier stated that he doesn’t want to panic and take his time before he makes a comeback. The 39-year old had undergone two knee surgeries in 2020 and since then he has picked his tournaments in order to manage his workload.

“I just got to talk to the team, take my time, not feel rushed by you guys or anybody else. I got to … take the right decision, the one decision I want to take and where I feel most comfortable,” Federer said after the loss. “But no. I hope not that that’s going to happen. The goal is to play, of course”.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 will begin from July 23.
