Kovacic dismisses exit rumors, commits future to Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic has insisted he remains committed to the club despite growing speculation linking him with a move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer. 

The Croatian international revealed that City have reassured him of his importance to the squad, even as reports continue to connect him with Serie A giants Juventus and former club Inter Milan.

Kovacic enters the final year of his contract with the Premier League champions and is yet to receive an extension. 

His future has become a topic of discussion following an injury-plagued campaign that limited him to just nine appearances due to Achilles and ankle problems. 

However, the 32-year-old says conversations with the club have convinced him that he still has a significant role to play.

“I spoke with them, and they told me they count on me, which was important for me to hear. As a player, it’s always up to you to show your best version because if you’re playing well, the manager will choose you.” Kovacic said.

His comments come after new manager Enzo Maresca gave a cautious response when asked about the midfielder’s future, saying he would continue to work with Kovacic for as long as he remains at the club.

With Rodri expected to miss the opening weeks of the season following back surgery, Kovacic could have an opportunity to feature regularly in midfield. 

He acknowledged that he is capable of filling the Spaniard’s role if required, while competition for places will also come from Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, and club-record signing Elliot Anderson.

Kovacic also praised Anderson, who joined Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for a reported £116 million after an impressive World Cup campaign with England. 

The Croatian described the 23-year-old as a player with quality, energy, and immense potential, adding that the youngster possesses the attributes needed to thrive under Maresca.

Looking ahead to the new campaign, Kovacic believes the Premier League remains home to the world’s best midfielders. 

He pointed to the quality across England’s top flight and said the fierce competition only serves to raise standards. 

Determined to put last season’s injury setbacks behind him, the experienced midfielder is now focused on proving his value and helping Manchester City compete for more silverware.
