Sinner claims second Australian Open title

Jannik Sinner has added another achievement to his resume after winning the Australian Open for the second consecutive year. The 23-year-old Italian defeated Alexander Zverev in a commanding straight-sets victory, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

This triumph marks Sinner’s third Grand Slam title, making him the first Italian to achieve this milestone. It also extends Sinner’s impressive winning streak to 21 matches and cements his place among tennis greats like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Sinner’s performance was marked by relentless baseline play and exceptional mental resilience. He faced no break points throughout the match, becoming the third man to do so at a grand slam final after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. For most of the match, world No. 2, Zverev, was unable to find an answer to Sinner’s attack.

One of the defining moments of the match came in the second set during a tiebreak, where a fortunate net cord helped Sinner gain an advantage, leading him to clinch the set and ultimately the match.

Despite ongoing scrutiny from a doping investigation, Sinner remained focused and composed, celebrating his victory with his team. After the match, he expressed gratitude for their support and offered encouragement to Zverev, acknowledging his talent and potential for future success.

Zverev’s search for a grand slam continues, despite making it to the grand slam final three times now. He’s currently one of the highly-ranked men who’s yet to win at any of the four grand slams.

In the women’s singles event, Madison Keys defeated world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka to win her first grand slam title. 29-year-old Keys almost saw the title slip out of her fingers after losing the second set, before coming back to claim the next, winning the match 6-3 2-6 7-5.

Keys had an eventful outing, beating top-ranked players like Iga Swiatek, Elina Svetolina, and Elena Rybakina, before defeating the Belarussian at the finals. She will now rise to world No. 7 when the rankings are updated on Monday.
