Swiatek Wins US Open For Second Grand Slam Victory of 2022

World number one, Iga Swiatek, is showing no signs of slowing her roll as she won her second Grand Slam this year on Saturday, at the final of the US Open women’s single. Swiatek defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6 (7-5) to win her third Grand Slam title and her first on hard court.

This is coming months after she beat Coco Gauff to win her second French Open title. With Saturday’s feat, Swiatek has now become the first woman to win both the French Open and US Open in one year since veteran Serena Williams achieved same in 2013. She is also the first woman since Williams to win seven titles in one year. Truly phenomenal.

Jabeur, who is yet to win a major title despite making two Grand Slam final appearances this year, struggled in the first set against the Pole as she only made two points. It was obvious she was having a hard time, and the moves she tried to come up with were not working as she may have expected. While she played better in the second set, she was outclassed by Swiatek.

Speaking after the match, Swiatek said she was not expecting a lot before the tournament and described the whole tournament as challenging. Turning to her opponent, Swiatek said she was sure that she and Jabeur would meet in other future matches, and she was sure that Jabeur would win some.

Jabeur, on her part, said she does not like Swiatek “much right now, but it’s OK.” But she also said that Swiatek deserved to win and added that she would continue to work hard as she chases her first grand slam title as, in her words, “this is just the beginning of so many things.” The 28-year-old is expected to move to number two on the women’s ranking, for her highest professional ranking yet.
