The New York Knicks are under fire after what many see as a baffling decision to part ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, a move that has left the franchise scrambling for a replacement with no takers in sight.
NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley didn’t mince words while addressing the Knicks’ predicament, calling them “the stupidest damn people in the world” during a segment ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Thibodeau’s exit came shortly after the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, following a surprise playoff run that included a dramatic upset over the top-seeded Boston Celtics. The Knicks ultimately fell short against the Indiana Pacers, but their progress under Thibodeau was widely praised.
Despite this, the Knicks’ front office chose to sever ties with the coach who led them to a 51-31 regular-season record and a 24-23 postseason mark over five seasons. Thibodeau’s overall 226-174 record and his role in transforming the Knicks into Eastern Conference contenders have sparked questions about the logic behind the firing.
Speaking candidly on national television, Barkley slammed the decision. “You don’t fire no good coach like that and don’t have a plan,” he said. “Tim’s done a hell of a job… and now the three coaches turn you down, you gotta have a plan. I don’t know what the hell they’re gonna do.”
Reports indicate the Knicks have reached out to multiple high-profile candidates, including Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, Minnesota’s Chris Finch, Houston’s Ime Udoka, and Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks. All of them reportedly declined interviews. The team even explored college options, reaching out to former Villanova coach Jay Wright and UConn’s Dan Hurley, but both also turned down the opportunity.
This series of rejections has raised concerns about the Knicks’ leadership and planning. With the NBA Draft fast approaching and no coach in place, questions are swirling about the team’s direction heading into the new season.
What was intended as a bold pivot appears to have backfired, leaving the Knicks without a clear vision, and without a head coach. As Barkley put it bluntly, “You gotta have a plan.” Right now, the Knicks appear to be without one.
