Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry will not take part in the NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles, as he continues to deal with discomfort in his right knee. The decision was confirmed on Monday, with the focus firmly on managing the injury and ensuring his availability for the remainder of the season.
Curry was ruled out for a fourth consecutive game on Monday night when the Warriors faced Memphis Grizzlies. Head coach Steve Kerr announced before tip-off that the veteran guard would also miss Wednesday’s home game against San Antonio Spurs. Kerr added that Curry will then sit out Sunday’s All-Star Game in hopes of returning after the league’s midseason break.
“He’s doing well,” Kerr said. “It’s really kind of a day-to-day thing, so it’s hard to predict for sure whether he’ll be playing in that first game after the break, but that’s definitely the hope, and if he is, if he can get through everything this week, then that puts him on pace to be playing.”
Golden State’s first game following the break is scheduled for February 19 against Boston Celtics at Chase Center, a potential target date for Curry’s return. The team has been cautious with the two-time MVP, prioritizing long-term health over short-term availability.
Curry, who will turn 38 on March 14, last played on January 30, when he exited early from a 131-124 home loss to the Detroit Pistons. Kerr revealed that the sore right knee had been bothering Curry for about a week prior to that game. Following the setback, Curry underwent an MRI exam to assess the issue.
The All-Star absence will mark another missed milestone in a season interrupted by injuries. Curry is set to miss his 15th game overall, with Golden State posting a 5-9 record in games he has sat out. His absences have come due to a variety of issues, including illness, a left quadriceps contusion, ankle problems, inflammation in his right knee, and now four games with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
Adding to the Warriors’ challenges, Curry’s backcourt partner Jimmy Butler is also sidelined. Butler underwent surgery on Monday after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a game against his former team, the Miami Heat, on January 19. With key players unavailable, Golden State will aim to stay competitive while awaiting reinforcements after the All-Star break.
