Speculation over LeBron James’ NBA future intensified on Wednesday after the Miami Heat accidentally uploaded a video appearing to tease the veteran superstar’s return to the franchise before quickly deleting it.
The Heat’s official YouTube channel briefly featured a live stream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference”, scheduled for July 27. The video, uploaded on Tuesday night, was removed shortly afterwards, prompting widespread discussion among fans about whether the four-time NBA champion was set for a return to Miami.
According to ESPN, a Heat spokesperson said the club’s social media team had been preparing for the possibility of James signing with the franchise and mistakenly published the link on the team’s YouTube channel.
The Heat did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
James, 41, announced last month that he would leave the Los Angeles Lakers, with his next destination remaining one of the biggest talking points of the NBA offseason. The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers have all been widely reported as potential landing spots for the NBA legend.
James previously enjoyed one of the most successful spells of his career with the Heat, helping the franchise win back-to-back NBA championships before returning to Cleveland. A move back to Miami would mark a reunion with the club where he captured two of his four league titles.
Despite the growing speculation, James’ long-time friend and agent, Rich Paul, insisted there is no rush for the veteran forward to make a decision on the next chapter of his career.
“We’re not going to be rushed,” Paul said on an episode of Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul released on Monday. “It’s his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he’ll make it.”
With no official announcement from James or any of the interested teams, the deleted YouTube stream has only added to the intrigue surrounding one of the NBA’s biggest offseason stories. For now, fans continue to wait for the former Lakers star to reveal where he will play his 24th NBA season.
