Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $273 million with the Cleveland Cavaliers, securing his long-term future with the franchise after leading the team to the Eastern Conference finals this past season.
The agreement, confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been officially announced, was completed on the first day Cleveland became eligible to offer the extension.
Mitchell still had two seasons remaining on his current contract and could have delayed negotiations until next summer, when he would have been eligible for a five-year supermax contract valued at $350 million. Instead, the seven-time NBA All-Star opted to commit his future to the Cavaliers.
The extension includes a player option worth $76 million for the 2030-31 season as well as a full trade kicker.
Mitchell had already expressed his desire to remain in Cleveland following the team’s playoff exit. “I love it here. I don’t know how else to say it. I have no doubt these guys can get there. We have unfinished business,” he said on May 25 after the Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals.
The new agreement ranks among the richest contracts in NBA history. In terms of total value, it trails only Jayson Tatum’s $314 million deal with Boston, Jaylen Brown’s $285 million contract signed with the Celtics before his move to Philadelphia, and Nikola Jokic’s $276 million contract with Denver. If Mitchell exercises his player option, the deal will carry an average annual value of just over $68 million, setting a new NBA record.
Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman previously highlighted Mitchell’s importance to the franchise and its future.
“When we have a superstar of his caliber that wants to be in Cleveland, that’s our best ambassador, that’s our best recruiter. There’s guys that are here that wouldn’t be here without him, quite frankly,” Altman said on May 29.
“So I think the bigger question is, the one that’s been answered is, does he want be here and does he want to be here long term? And I think he’s answered that.”
The 29-year-old averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds during the regular season, while contributing 26 points per game in the playoffs as Cleveland reached its first conference finals since 2018. Since arriving in a trade from the Utah Jazz in 2022, Mitchell has averaged 26.7 points across four seasons with the Cavaliers.
Mitchell’s extension is expected to be the first of several key roster decisions for Cleveland, with further moves anticipated as the franchise looks to build on its recent success.
