James Harden delivered an inspiring performance on Sunday night, returning from injury to guide the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 106-102 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Still recovering from a fractured right thumb, the 36-year-old guard showed little hesitation when it mattered most. Harden finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, knocking down four of his seven attempts from beyond the arc. The performance came just days after he missed two games following the injury sustained in a 109-94 win over the New York Knicks last Tuesday.

Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged that Harden was not at full strength early on.

“You could see in the first half he’s not 100 percent, obviously,” Atkinson said. “I thought in the second half though he had that stretch there where we were struggling. He kind of took over, got to the free-throw line, hit a couple 3’s, so that was good.”

Harden had eight points before halftime as the Cavaliers trailed 52-46 at the break. But the momentum shifted after the interval. Midway through the third quarter, Harden sparked a decisive run. He calmly sank two free throws before converting a four-point play, swinging the game in Cleveland’s favor and pushing the Cavs to a 70-64 lead with 4:40 left in the period.

The 11-time All-Star, acquired in a Feb. 3 trade from the Los Angeles Clippers, continues to settle into his new surroundings. Through eight games with Cleveland, the 17-year veteran is averaging 19.3 points, 8.0 assists and 5.1 rebounds — numbers that underline his continued influence.

Despite visible discomfort, Harden’s composure down the stretch proved vital as Brooklyn attempted to claw back into contention. Cleveland held firm, sealing a hard-fought four-point win that further strengthens its position in the standings.

“We needed him tonight,” Atkinson added. “Obviously playing handicapped, he still played really well.”

For the Cavaliers, Harden’s return even at less than full health could be a significant boost as they push deeper into the season.
