Hawks Acquire Dorian Finney-Smith, Send Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard to Hornets

The Atlanta Hawks have acquired forward Dorian Finney-Smith from the Charlotte Hornets in a trade involving guards Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard.

Both teams announced the deal on Tuesday night. Atlanta received Finney-Smith, while Charlotte added Hield, Nembhard and cash considerations in return.

The move gives Finney-Smith another change of team after Charlotte acquired him earlier in the offseason from the Houston Rockets. The Hornets had received Finney-Smith along with three second-round draft picks in that deal.

Finney-Smith spent last season with Houston but saw limited playing time. The Rockets were looking to move his contract, leading to his initial trade to Charlotte before the Hornets sent him on to Atlanta.

For the Hawks, the deal brings in a forward while requiring the team to part with two guards.

Hield arrives in Charlotte after splitting last season between the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta. He appeared in 51 games across the two teams and averaged 7.6 points per game.

Nembhard, meanwhile, joins the Hornets after playing 60 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season. He averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 assists per game, providing Charlotte with another option in its backcourt.

The inclusion of cash considerations completes Charlotte’s return for Finney-Smith.

The trade continues a busy offseason for Finney-Smith, who has now been involved in multiple transactions. After spending last season with the Rockets, he was first sent to Charlotte as part of a deal that also brought the Hornets three second-round selections.

Charlotte has now moved the forward to Atlanta before the start of the new season, turning the earlier acquisition into two guards and additional cash.

For Hield, the transaction means another move after he represented both Golden State and Atlanta during the previous campaign. Nembhard will also make a switch after his season with Dallas.

The completed deal leaves Atlanta with Finney-Smith and sends Hield and Nembhard to a Charlotte roster that has already undergone changes during the offseason.

With both franchises confirming the transaction Tuesday night, Finney-Smith will now continue his career with the Hawks, while Hield and Nembhard head in the opposite direction to join the Hornets.
