Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto Raptors as NBA Approves Blockbuster Clippers Trade

Kawhi Leonard is officially a Toronto Raptors player again after the NBA approved his trade from the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, completing a deal that had been agreed more than two months ago.

Under the trade, the Raptors receive Leonard, while the Clippers get Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round selections and a pick swap.

The move brings Leonard back to the franchise where he played a major role in delivering the 2019 NBA championship.

Although the two teams had reached an agreement around two-and-a-half months ago, the trade could not be completed immediately because of an NBA investigation involving the Clippers.

The league was investigating whether Los Angeles had circumvented salary cap rules in connection with Leonard’s compensation. That probe delayed the completion of the high-profile move until league approval finally arrived on Monday.

The investigation resulted in major penalties for the Clippers earlier this month. Team owner Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year, while the franchise was fined $30 million and ordered to forfeit five first-round draft picks, along with other sanctions.

Leonard was also handed a $700,000 penalty.

With the investigation no longer preventing the transaction from going through, Toronto can now turn its attention to integrating the two-time NBA Finals MVP into its roster.

Leonard returns to the Raptors following the highest-scoring season of his career. The experienced forward averaged 27.9 points across 65 appearances for the Clippers, underlining the offensive quality he brings back to Toronto.

His previous spell with the Raptors remains one of the most significant periods in franchise history. Leonard was a central figure in Toronto’s successful 2019 championship run before moving on from the team.

Now, years after helping the Raptors reach the top of the NBA, Leonard is set for another chapter in Toronto as the franchise looks to build towards another championship challenge.
