Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard is set to miss at least one week of NBA action after experiencing swelling in his left knee, the franchise confirmed on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over the veteran forward’s fitness.
The 35-year-old, who returned to Toronto during the summer following a spell with the Los Angeles Clippers, will undergo treatment and rehabilitation before the team assesses his availability for upcoming games.
Leonard was unexpectedly withdrawn from the Raptors’ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday after initially being considered for selection.
The decision prompted concerns about another potential injury setback for the two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, who has dealt with recurring knee problems throughout his career.
However, medical examinations provided some reassurance, with the Raptors confirming that tests found no fresh structural damage or acute injury in his left knee.
The franchise said Leonard will follow “a treatment and rehabilitation program to address swelling,” with his condition expected to be monitored over the coming days.
Despite the encouraging test results, Toronto will be without one of its most experienced players as it navigates the early stages of the season.
Leonard has appeared in just two games so far, averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals while playing approximately 26 minutes per contest.
Although his overall contributions have remained significant, the forward has struggled with his shooting efficiency, converting only 32 per cent of his attempts across those appearances.
His latest absence comes shortly after a much-anticipated return to the franchise where he enjoyed one of the defining achievements of his career.
Leonard famously guided Toronto to its first and only NBA championship in 2019, delivering a memorable postseason campaign that earned him the second NBA Finals MVP award of his career.
Following his time in Los Angeles, the Clippers traded him back to the Raptors this summer, paving the way for a reunion with the Canadian franchise.
Soon after completing the move, Leonard agreed to a contract extension worth USD 115 million, with an option that could keep him in Toronto through the 2028-29 season.
The agreement underlined the Raptors’ commitment to the veteran star, whose experience and championship pedigree remain valuable assets.
For now, Toronto’s immediate priority will be ensuring Leonard makes a full recovery rather than rushing him back into competitive action.
With no acute injury detected, the Raptors will hope the swelling responds positively to treatment, allowing their star forward to return after his initial week-long absence.
