Fleetwood Town Stun Arsenal in Historic Carabao Cup Upset After Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Fleetwood Town produced one of the greatest shocks in Carabao Cup history after knocking out Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties to secure a remarkable place in the quarter-finals.

The League Two side, sitting 84 places below Arsenal in the English football pyramid, held Mikel Arteta’s team to a 1-1 draw before goalkeeper Jay Lynch inspired a famous shootout victory at Highbury Stadium.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood a surprise lead in the 21st minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake by Arsenal youngster Marli Salmon before firing through debutant goalkeeper Illan Meslier’s legs.

The match had earlier been interrupted for eight minutes after referee Michael Salisbury spotted a drone flying above the stadium, forcing players to temporarily leave the pitch.

Despite Arsenal dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Fleetwood carried their narrow advantage into half-time.

Viktor Gyokeres eventually brought Arsenal level four minutes after the restart, poking home from close range following a scramble inside the six-yard box.

However, the visitors struggled to turn their dominance into goals. Arsenal registered 26 shots and 59 touches inside Fleetwood’s penalty area but repeatedly failed to find a winner.

Fleetwood defenders Rhys Bennett, Conor Haughey and Shaun Rooney delivered outstanding performances, blocking shots and frustrating the Premier League champions throughout the contest.

Arsenal’s problems deepened in the 86th minute when 16-year-old Max Dowman received a straight red card for kicking out at Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge.

Lynch then made two crucial late saves to deny Ben White and Martin Odegaard, ensuring the contest would be decided by penalties.

The Fleetwood goalkeeper continued his heroics in the shootout, saving Bruno Guimaraes’ effort before Haughey confidently converted the decisive spot kick.

Ronan Coughlan, Neal, Will Davies and Andy Cannon also scored their penalties, while Meslier failed to stop any of Fleetwood’s attempts.

The final whistle triggered extraordinary celebrations as supporters invaded the pitch and Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor broke down in tears.

Home fans had earlier mocked Arsenal with chants of “champions of England, you’re having a laugh” as their team resisted relentless attacking pressure.

Arteta, who made nine changes following Arsenal’s victory over Everton, was left facing questions over his team’s wasteful finishing and disappointing performance against opponents sitting 18th in League Two.

For Fleetwood, the victory represents a historic achievement and an unforgettable night for their supporters.

The Cod Army will discover their quarter-final opponents following Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash between Chelsea and Liverpool.
