Arsenal post dominant display to beat Bayer Leverkusen

Arsenal produced a commanding performance at the Emirates Stadium to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen and book their place in the Champions League quarter-finals. 

The Gunners will now face Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, who staged a remarkable comeback earlier on Tuesday by overturning a three-goal first-leg deficit to defeat Bodo/Glimt 5-3 on aggregate.

Having needed a late Kai Havertz penalty to rescue a 1-1 draw in the opening leg in Germany, Arsenal were determined to seize control on home soil. 

They delivered with style and substance, dominating proceedings from the outset and continuing their pursuit of silverware across four competitions this season.

The breakthrough arrived in the first half through Eberechi Eze, who showcased his growing confidence by controlling a precise Leandro Trossard pass before unleashing an unstoppable thunderbolt from outside the penalty area. 

The strike marked his fourth goal in just seven appearances, igniting the Emirates crowd and setting the tone for a memorable night.

Declan Rice then added a second goal of equal brilliance shortly after the hour mark. Intercepting a loose Leverkusen clearance, the England international surged forward with purpose and stroked a sublime finish into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Janis Blaswich with no chance. It was a moment that encapsulated Arsenal’s midfield mastery and attacking flair.

Blaswich proved the visitors’ hero, producing an astonishing 10 saves to prevent an even heavier defeat. 

Arsenal laid relentless siege to the Leverkusen goal, with Gabriel, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard all denied by the German keeper. 

Ben White, making only his second start since late January in place of the injured Jurrien Timber, also saw a close-range effort from a goalmouth scramble brilliantly parried away.

Leverkusen offered little threat throughout but went close late on when David Raya produced an acrobatic, one-handed save to deny Christian Kofane. 

The victory underlined Arsenal’s European credentials and sets up an intriguing quarter-final clash against a resilient Sporting side.
