Knicks and Heat Emerge as Leading Contenders as Giannis Trade Rumors Intensify

Rumors surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future continue to swirl, with growing tension inside the Milwaukee Bucks locker room amplifying speculation that the two-time MVP could request a trade before this season’s deadline.

As doubts increase over the Bucks’ ability to contend — especially with Antetokounmpo sidelined for multiple weeks — the likelihood of a blockbuster move appears stronger than ever. For many teams, acquiring a former NBA champion would instantly reshape their franchise, but two organizations have emerged as the frontrunners: the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat.

Reporter Sam Amick, appearing on Run It Back, reaffirmed that these two teams remain the most realistic destinations for the superstar forward. “They have a lot of good things going for them. The culture is intact; we know the interest is there. I think Miami could be a great fit if the Knicks thing isn’t there,” Amick said. His comments align with earlier reports suggesting Giannis had already identified the Knicks as his preferred landing spot last offseason before Milwaukee persuaded him to give the current campaign a chance.

With the Bucks’ season trending in the wrong direction, the possibility of Antetokounmpo requesting a trade grows more tangible. Should that happen, New York appears positioned as his top choice. The appeal goes beyond basketball — the business potential of the NBA’s largest media market remains a major draw. “New York, as a market, Giannis and his business sense has looked at that in the past,” Amick noted. “He has no interest in leaving any money on the table and he wants the biggest profile off the court. New York checks all those boxes.”

Yet the Knicks face a significant hurdle: their ability to meet Milwaukee’s steep demands. Having surrendered a trove of draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets in the deal for Mikal Bridges, New York’s trade package may fall short of what the Bucks will likely seek for their franchise cornerstone. Milwaukee is expected to prioritize young talent with high upside, along with future picks — areas where the Knicks are suddenly limited.

This is where the Miami Heat enter the equation. Miami boasts a more appealing stockpile of young players, including talents such as Kel’el Ware and rookie Kasparas Jakucionis, who could headline a competitive offer. Their organizational culture, playoff pedigree, and readiness to build around a new superstar further strengthen their case. According to Amick, the Heat are the franchise to watch if New York cannot assemble an attractive deal, keeping them firmly in the mix as the deadline approaches.

As reports keep pointing toward the Knicks and Heat as the leading suitors, the NBA waits for the next and potentially decisive move from Antetokounmpo.
