Kounde’s Double Fires Barcelona to Crucial Champions League Comeback Win

Barcelona reignited its UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday night with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at Camp Nou, thanks to a quickfire brace from Jules Kounde that turned the match on its head. 

The win comes at a vital moment for the Catalan side, which had stumbled in its previous two outings with a draw against Club Brugge and a loss to Chelsea. With this result, Barcelona climbs to 14th in the standings as it pushes for a top-eight finish and direct qualification for the last 16. Frankfurt, meanwhile, remains 30th with just four points from six matches.

In front of an animated Camp Nou crowd, hosting its first Champions League fixture since partially reopening after more than two years of redevelopment, Barcelona dominated early possession. Robert Lewandowski appeared to have given the hosts the perfect start in the ninth minute, but his close-range finish was ruled out for offside in the build-up. 

Despite Barcelona’s early control, it was Frankfurt that opened the scoring. In the 21st minute, Nathaniel Brown split the defence with a precise pass to Ansgar Knauff, who sprinted past Alejandro Balde and calmly slotted the ball beyond Joan Garcia.

The goal highlighted Barcelona’s ongoing defensive struggles under coach Hansi Flick, extending its run of conceding in nine consecutive Champions League matches. Barca pushed for an equaliser before the break, with Lamine Yamal creating one of the best opportunities by delivering a dangerous low cross to Fermin Lopez, whose effort was blocked on the line. Frankfurt nearly doubled its advantage just before half-time when Ellyes Skhiri fired narrowly wide.

Frankfurt started the second half brightly as well, forcing Garcia into two sharp saves to keep the deficit at one. Those stops proved crucial, allowing Barcelona the chance to shift momentum. In the 50th minute, substitute Marcus Rashford swung in a perfectly weighted cross that found Kounde, who headed home from inside the box. Just three minutes later, the French defender struck again—this time rising above a crowded penalty area to meet a Yamal cross and nod in the eventual winner.

“They have made it difficult for us,” Pedri told Movistar Plus after the match. “They sat very deep, had a lot of players on the back, which makes it tough. Yamal had two or three players on him all the time. We made some adjustments at half-time, put more players up front, and it worked out. We felt better and found the goals. Kounde is a guy who works hard and deserves it. We’re happy with the result.”

Barcelona pushed for a third goal late on, but Frankfurt remained dangerous on the counter. Ultimately, Kounde’s decisive double was enough to secure a much-needed boost to Barcelona’s Champions League hopes.
