Kuminga’s Free Agency in Limbo as Warriors Weigh Options and Market Cools

As the 2025 NBA free agency dust begins to settle, one name still drawing attention is that of Jonathan Kuminga. The 22-year-old forward, now a restricted free agent after four seasons with the Golden State Warriors, faces an uncertain future as the market tightens and options dwindle.

Kuminga, a high-upside talent whose role fluctuated dramatically last season, averaged 15.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. At times, he was a go-to scoring option; at others, he found himself benched. That inconsistency has made it difficult to pinpoint his true market value.

According to a report from The Athletic, 16 NBA front office professionals were polled to gauge what Kuminga’s next deal should look like. One executive suggested a five-year, $125 million contract, using Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels as a benchmark. McDaniels signed a five-year, $131 million extension last season.

“McDaniels is great in his role, but J.K. is more talented and has higher upside if he can ever hit,” the executive explained, implying that teams with the patience to bet on potential may be inclined to reach deeper into their pockets.

Such a deal would be a windfall for Kuminga, especially considering his up-and-down usage last season. Yet, despite the upside, financial constraints could dictate a different path.

Golden State, currently without the cap flexibility to offer a significant deal, has reportedly explored sign-and-trade scenarios to avoid losing Kuminga for nothing. However, no concrete moves have materialized, leaving both player and team in a holding pattern.

The Warriors retain some leverage due to Kuminga’s restricted status—they can match any offer he receives—but if another franchise does float a deal near $125 million, Golden State would be hard-pressed to match it under the current cap structure.

In the absence of such an offer, Kuminga may be forced to settle for a shorter-term or lower-value contract. While some teams view him as a long-term investment, many have already used their cap space or addressed roster needs elsewhere.

For now, Kuminga waits. With the market narrowing and teams finalizing rosters, the coming days may determine whether he secures a breakout contract or is left taking a lesser deal—either with the Warriors or elsewhere.
