NBA Analyst Shannon Sharpe believes Memphis talisman Ja Morant is not a superstar

There has been a lot of discussion around Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant. The young guard recently got the ‘Most Improved Player’ award and also has caught eyeballs with his performances. Morant is on the verge of guiding Grizzlies to the second round as they lead 3-2 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, NBA analyst Shannon Sharpe believes that despite all his heroics this season, Morant is not a superstar for him. Into his third year in the NBA, Morant has really delivered some eye catching plays for Memphis  as he led them to the playoffs and now is on the verge of taking them to the second round. He stole the show in the fourth quarter against Minnesota as Morant led a coemback to help the Grizzlies bag a 111-109 win over Karl Anthony Towns and company.

Morant came up with a big time dunk to register the third win for the Memphis. His performances have made garnered a lot of praise from fans and experts. However, Sharpe does not believe that the youngster is superstar level yet in the NBA.

On “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” Shannon Sharpe shared whether Morant has become a bonafide superstar for Memphis. He said, “He is a star. He is on the rise, but I wouldn’t label him a superstar just yet. He has that freakish athletic ability like D-Rose (Derrick Rose) pre-injury, like Russ (Russell Westbrook) pre-injury. He has that ability to play above the rim. He’s not a great outside shooter, like these guys weren’t. But if he gets hot, he can make you pay.”

Sharpe believes that the 22-year-old has not yet touched his ceiling and will grow more in the coming years. Hence he feels that Morant is a growing superstar but not there yet. “So, when I look at him, he is a burgeoning superstar. He’s not quite there yet.”

After leading his team to the second position in the Western Conference, Morant is looking to take Memphis to the conference semifinals for first time since 2015. If they reach there, they will face Steph Curry’s Golden State Warriors.
