The situation came to light on November 22, gaining traction on social media platforms. Despite the Thanksgiving break, the Thunder team resumed practice on November 24. During this time, both Giddey and Thunder’s head coach, Mark Daigneault, chose not to comment on the allegations.
“I understand the question, obviously, but there’s no further comment right now,” Giddey said.
Daigneault said it’s a “personal matter and I have no comment on it. That will be my answer to anything related.”
It was later confirmed that the NBA had formally opened an investigation into these claims. Details surrounding the allegations and the progress of the NBA’s inquiry are still unfolding.
On November 24, notable sports journalists Shams Charania of The Athletic and Tim MacMahon of ESPN reported on the NBA’s ongoing investigation into the matter.
The NBA has yet to make a definitive statement regarding their findings or any potential actions against Giddey. The outcome of the investigation will shape any future decisions. Oklahoma City Thunder’s upcoming game is scheduled for November 25 against Philadelphia.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Giddey participated in the Thunder’s practice session on November 24 and is expected to play in the upcoming game.
The NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, while not specifically addressing issues related to improper relationships with minors, does include policies regarding violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. These policies allow for the possibility of placing a player on administrative leave with pay under certain circumstances.
Josh Giddey, aged 21, was born on October 10, 2002. He was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and began his NBA career shortly after his 19th birthday. The 2023-24 season marks Giddey’s third year in the NBA.
